    Building + Contents

We Handle the Building Claim and Build Your Contents List

Most homeowners lose money on contents because no one has time to list every damaged item. We handle both sides of the claim, so nothing gets left out.

Building claim: full scope of walls, floors, cabinets and hidden moisture, priced at real Long Island rates and negotiated with your insurer.

Contents inventory: a room-by-room list of damaged belongings at replacement cost, built with our inventory service kevin.co.

What to Do in the First 24 Hours After Property Damage

The first day decides how much of your claim you can prove. Follow these eight steps before the insurance company's adjuster arrives.

    1. 1

      Make it safe

Shut off water, gas or power at the source if it's safe. Leave the home if there is fire, structural or electrical risk.

    2. 2

      Photograph everything first

Wide shots of every room and outside wall, then close-ups — before any cleanup, tarping or tear-out.

    3. 3

      Stop further damage

Tarp, board up or extract water. Your policy requires it, and the cost is part of the claim. Keep every receipt.

    4. 4

      Keep damaged items

Don't throw out flooring, contents or materials until they're photographed and listed. They are your evidence.

    5. 5

Report the loss — but don't give a recorded statement yet

Give the insurer the date and type of loss. Hold off on recorded statements and guessing about cause.

    6. 6

Don't sign anything from the insurer's adjuster

Don't accept the first estimate or sign a release on day one. Early estimates routinely miss hidden damage.

    7. 7

      Track your extra living costs

Hotel, meals and travel above your normal spending are usually covered under Additional Living Expense.

    8. 8

      Get a free claim review

Call a licensed public adjuster before the insurer's inspection so your side of the damage is documented too.

The First Estimate Is Rarely the Whole Claim

A carrier's first estimate is often just the starting point. Hidden damage, missing scope, incorrect quantities and incomplete repair methods can change the value of a claim dramatically.

    Fire Damage

    $186,000 → $600,000+

A major residential fire where the first estimate focused on visibly burned rooms but missed widespread smoke, structural and reconstruction damage.

    Underpaid Claim

    $68,000 → $224,000

A line-by-line review uncovered missing quantities, incomplete repairs, overlooked rooms and work required to restore the property.

    Water Damage

    $18,600 → $74,000

A supply-line loss became substantially larger after hidden damage and the complete repair sequence were documented.

    Denied Claim

    Denied → $310,000

Additional evidence and a reconstructed timeline corrected the incomplete assumptions behind the original coverage decision.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to the most common questions about working with a public adjuster.

Should I call a public adjuster before my insurance company?

Yes. Calling us first ensures your claim is filed correctly from day one, preventing errors that insurers use to underpay claims later.

How much does a public adjuster charge?

We work on a contingency basis (no upfront fees). We only get paid a small percentage of the final settlement. In NYS the maximum fee a Public Adjuster can charge is 12.5% however most claims are handled in the 8-10% range.

Will my insurance premium go up if I hire you?

No. Hiring a public adjuster is your right and does not trigger rate increases. Rates typically rise based on claim frequency or regional risk, not professional representation.
